My Second Year as a Realtor: Growth through Challenges

Writer: Alma Nely LarkinAlma Nely Larkin

My second year as a realtor was a rollercoaster—full of wins, losses, and invaluable lessons.

Navigating the Ups and Downs

Going into this year, I knew it would be tough. The market shifts, client expectations, and the natural learning curve of any profession made for a challenging yet fulfilling experience. While I had more earnings than in my first year, it was still a rough road to travel. There were deals that fell through, clients who were difficult to please, and moments of self-doubt. But despite the setbacks, I continued pushing forward, determined to improve with every transaction.

I had fewer clients this year compared to my first, but the relationships I built were deeper and more meaningful. I wasn’t just selling houses; I was building connections, making an impact, and growing both professionally and personally. Whether it was helping a young couple buy their first home, assisting a family friend in selling their property, or guiding a new client through the complexities of the market, each experience was unique and valuable.

Lessons Learned in Year Two

One of the biggest lessons I learned this year is that not every client will be completely satisfied, no matter how much effort I put in. I always strive to provide the best service possible, but sometimes, expectations and reality don’t align. I’ve had to learn how to navigate difficult conversations, manage emotions—both mine and my clients’—and remind myself that I can’t control everything.

That being said, I never allowed myself to become a hypocrite or a fake version of myself just to close a deal. I remained genuine in my interactions, which led to long-term friendships and lasting trust. Authenticity is something I value, and I believe that being real with people is what will ultimately lead to success in this industry.

Another key takeaway from this year was the importance of adaptability. The real estate market is constantly changing, and being able to pivot and adjust strategies is crucial. Whether it was fine-tuning my marketing approach, improving my negotiation skills, or leveraging technology to stay ahead, I had to stay proactive and open to learning.

The Reward of Relationships

Despite the challenges, this year blessed me with incredible new relationships. I got to help not just clients, but also friends, family, and their extended circles. There’s something special about being entrusted with such an important milestone in people’s lives.

I’ve laughed with clients during home tours, celebrated their victories, and reassured them during stressful moments. Some of these relationships have turned into true friendships, which is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job. Real estate isn’t just about buying and selling houses—it’s about helping people transition into new chapters of their lives.

Looking Ahead to Year Three

As I step into my third year, I feel more prepared than ever. The struggles of this past year have only made me stronger and more resilient. I know that success in real estate isn’t just about numbers—it’s about consistency, relationships, and growth. My goal is to take the lessons I’ve learned and apply them to continue serving my clients in the best way possible.

I’m excited for what’s to come—the new clients, new experiences, and new challenges that will shape me even further. I’m grateful for the people who have supported me along the way, and I look forward to another year of building, learning, and succeeding.

To anyone who has been a part of my journey—whether as a client, friend, or mentor—thank you. Your trust and support mean the world to me, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
